Stellar San Diego Interior Designer--Vanessa Matsalla

Posted by Christie Gray on Friday, January 29th, 2016 at 11:26am.

If you follow me on social media, you know that I totally geeked out a couple of weeks ago over the GORGEOUS stylings of local interior designer Vanessa Matsalla, owner of Studio Matsalla.  I was laying in bed one Saturday, and fell down the rabbit hole of Instagram.  Somehow I stumbled upon Vanessa's page, and instantly fell in love.  Her designs really speak to me; they're beach-y, modern, clean, vibrant and inviting.

I personally haven't been a big fan of the more modern designs in the past.  I feel like they sometimes feel impersonal and cold, yet Studio Matsalla's take on modern furnishings are completely the opposite.  They somehow draw you in, and their simplicity is refreshing and beautiful.  The materials used and designs chosen seem to reflect Vanessa's point of view and also the taste of each client.  I'm swooning over the kitchen light fixtures she chooses, as well as the rugs, bathroom tiles, and blue kitchen cabinets.

Vanessa has her own shop in Carlsbad, and I'd love to take a little trip north to visit!  She also offers full-service design, as well as e-design.

I reached out to Vanessa and asked if I could use some of her photos in this blog post, as well as ask her a few questions about her business and style.

CG:  How would you describe your design aesthetic?

VM:  My aesthetic is best described as modern-eclectic. I love a space that feels intentional, thoughtful and unique. For me, that usually means pairing a few different styles together for one-cohesive end product!

CG:  What are your best quick and easy design tips?

VM:  Don't be afraid to mix styles - when you do, make sure there is somewhat of a dialogue between each piece, whether that is through the color, texture or prints.

CG:  How can you make your condo or house feel cohesive?

VM:  Your home should have a running theme throughout. Is it modern industrial? Sophisticated and serene? Mid-Century Modern? Once you've decided on one or two that you connect with, you can slowly incorporate elements that reflect that, whether its through your core pieces like rugs and sofa - or through accessories like lighting and decor. Everything doesn't have to happen all at once, but thoughtfully choosing furniture and accessories makes a big difference rather than slapping things together quickly.

CG:  How do you incorporate your clients' styles into your design choices?

VM:  The best design projects are executed when the client and designer have a seamless collaboration. My design choices are always thoughtful, with my client first in mind. I design around what I think looks good and what I think my client will love - inevitably, the end-result has a bit of Studio Matsalla infusion that happens organically.

I would love to have Studio Matsalla design my home or office someday.  In the meantime, I'll have to settle for daydreaming over the beautiful photos of her past work:

You can visit Vanessa's store at 2699 State Street in Carlsbad, or head to her website at  Thank you, Vanessa, for allowing me to feature Studio Matsalla in today's post!
