The Boxing Club-- A Sports Club Success Story

Posted by Christie Gray on Thursday, January 21st, 2016 at 10:46am.

I am so excited to write a post today about one of my favorite local UTC businesses--The Boxing Club.  Located on Level 2 of the Costa Verde shopping center, The Boxing Club brings a new take on the typical fitness gym.

I've only been a member of The Boxing Club (TBC) for a little over a year, but I've learned so much already! I thought everyone there would be very intense, almost angry, taking out their frustrations on bags and on each other.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  While it's true that boxing provides fantastic stress relief, members of the club, staff, and coaches are so warm, welcoming, and friendly.  Massive shoutout to Coach Caine for making every newbie feel comfortable and not embarrassed for asking questions and taking breaks every 2 minutes.  Coach Daniel is also amazing, and you will FEEL THE BURN in his class.  My favorite class is "Power Boxing," though TBC also has yoga, kickboxing, a 45 minute "burn" class, sparring, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and more.

Personally, I visit TBC for a good workout, not necessarily to learn how to win a fight.  My form is not perfect, I do "girly pushups," and I have never managed to do a single "Marvin Hagler" sit-up.  I'm one of the slower people to finish the exercises.  I have learned, though, that elbows and shins are powerful weapons if needed.  I've learned that I can get through a super intense 60 minute class without dying.  And I've seen my right hook get stronger and stronger.  ;)

I don't rely solely on boxing for fitness.  I mix in tennis, yoga, long walks, spin, and boot camp classes to change things up.  Plus, 2 boxing classes per week usually keeps me pretty sore throughout the other days!  My mom is intense and does 4+ classes per week, but I'm not there yet.  And that's OK!  I always look forward to visiting The Boxing Club, and UTC is lucky to have such a fantastic local business.

I had the privilege of asking TBC Marketing Manager, Cassandra Velez and Managing Director Artem Sharoshkin a few questions.  Cassandra answered the first two below, and Artem answered the last two.

Q:  What makes The Boxing Club so special to its members?

A:  The Boxing Club is a unique experience compared to most other gyms in San Diego. Because we offer a full weight room and cardio area, we have the appeal of a big box gym, but our classes in Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, and Yoga also give members the sense that they belong to a specialized studio. That unique dichotomy allows members to not only get into shape, but also to learn a new technique that's useful in so many aspects of their lives and provides them with much-needed stress relief.

Q:  The Boxing Club staff and members feel like one big family--how do you foster that environment of support and respect?

A:  It's been our goal since day 1 to have The Boxing Club be a place where we not only train our members and help them to reach their goals, but also develop friendships with them. If you ever talk to one of our employees, you'll see how truly passionate they are about what they do and helping their clients reach their goals. A lot of gyms lack that personal feel and most don't even know their members by name, but we believe that members are more likely to continue their journey with us when they can feel how much we care about them and want to help them grow.

Q:  What would you say to someone who is considering joining TBC that has never boxed before?

A:  Because of how boxing is portrayed in the media, people are often intimidated to try out this kind of workout because they think they won't be experienced enough, but a majority of our classes are actually designed to accommodate people who have no previous experience in boxing or kickboxing. Each class has an easy-to-follow format and is taught under close supervision from our coaches. Before taking any class, everyone is also given an introductory session so they feel comfortable with the basics and are more confident before stepping into class.

Q:  How do you envision the future of the club over the next 3 years?

A: Over the next 3 years, we envision The Boxing Club continuing to grow as a company as well as a family by serving multiple communities within San Diego County. Our main goal is to never lose our family feel and tight-knit community no matter how large we grow. We will continue bringing the newest fitness trends and best instructors in the industry.

Here are a few photos I took the other day at TBC:
